The absence of something is not enough

HDK-Valand

BFA Photography Exhibition

The Absence of Something is Not Enough brings together 15 student artists from Valand Academy, Gothenburg University for a final year exhibition with the collaboration of the Röda Sten Konsthall.

The exhibition title The Absence of Something is Not Enough alludes to a sense of disquiet, an anxiety and provocation on how absence is understood and experienced and on how ideas of being adequate to the times circulate and trouble political, social and artistic action and expectation.

Encompassing sculpture, installation, moving image and photography the exhibition presents a range of responses to environmental changes, including the natural light of the gallery spaces, that emphasize the time-bound, the perceptual, and the haptic to ask what can critical and creative arts do in relation to each other, to the non-human world that surrounds us, and, not least, to our understanding of connectivity.

While the individual work of the 15 student artists differs in choice of medium and method it converges in the enquiry on technology, communication, perception and memory and the complex ways in which absence is thought and felt and made material.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a series of public events, in response to the artworks and to the speculative aphorism that the absence of something is not enough. The series of public events are intended to facilitate dialogue and understanding of the social, political and cultural research processes that inform contemporary artistic practice.
